Today was the day!
Justin had been making giant red X's across his calendar, marking each as one day closer to his next Disneyland Resort adventure. He had focused his newest drawings on Chip & Dale, anticipating greeting the two lovable chipmunks at the entrance and presenting his masterpiece to their delighted faces.
The drawing went inside of a page protector, tucked snugly into his portable portfolio and under his arm. He was as excited as could be.
And there they were! The sun was blazing down and the twin goofsters were hanging out underneath a tree in the Town Square. Justin's face was full of with glee! They were taking pictures with a little princess dressed like Snow White. It was almost Justin's turn.
But then suddenly, as the little girl bounced away with her mother and signed autograph book, it was time for Chip & Dale to go. Ushered away in front of his eyes, Justin's smile faltered.
"Wait a moment!"
Justin skipped up to them, holding out his drawing as they walked away. "I made this for you." He smiled his lopsided grin, looking innocent and jubilant to see his new idols underneath his large Mickey Mouse ears.
But instead of taking the drawing, they kissed their hands and touched the paper, waving goodbye and hurrying off. The look on Justin's face was one of shock; he stood there dumbstruck. They didn't take his drawing he had made specifically for them and from his point of view, he felt rejected.
Sometimes it's difficult for Justin to understand the details of a situation. For instance, it was a hot summer day that was pushing 90 degrees, crowded and right around lunch time. Chip and Dale were obviously on a tight schedule. But to Justin, his only understanding was that they were here and then they were gone. And he didn't receive the outcome he wanted or anticipated.
So there were some tears. But after a quiet conversation on a bench by the ice cream parlour, we talked it out. Circumstances change all the time and sometimes we just have to go with the flow. Transitions are a bit if a struggle for Justin, but with kindness and calmness he can learn to adjust his attitude and focus on the future rather than dwelling on a minor mishap.
Luckily, Justin was able to go back a few days later and this time Chip & Dale were around to accept his drawing! And they loved it. :)
